Are CookUnity ready meals a good choice for someone who is chronically ill? It’s the first meal delivery I’m trying that doesn’t involve any preparation. Read my CookUnity review to see if it might be right for you.
Cost: I chose the 8 meal plan which comes to $91.92 total or $11.49 for each meal. I used a referral code to get $40 off which took my total to $56.53 with tax.
Shipping: Delivery was free for my order! Like the previous meal deliveries I received, CookUnity also gave a delivery window of 8am-8pm. Once shipped, a UPS tracking number was sent with a narrower delivery window. Everything arrived secure and in good condition.
Selection: The selection on CookUnity is very good. There were around 250 meal choices total. You can choose dietary restrictions including gluten free, dairy free, low carb, vegetarian, seafood, and low sodium. Calorie count is available and as I have gastroparesis, I like to have as many calories as I can get. I chose cedar planked trout, seared barramundi with lemon, chicken avocado burger, pork tenderloin with sweet potato au gratin, chicken and veggie patties, chicken cordon bleu, coconut crusted chicken salad, and barbecue salmon with corn salad.
What’s Included: The meals are fresh and ready to eat after heating. There are no ingredients to cut, measure, or prepare. The packaging is recyclable and meals stay fresh 4-7 days. You can freeze the meals if you are unable to eat them fresh. I kept 3 meals in the fridge for the week and put the remaining 5 in the freezer. The ones placed in the freezer will easily thaw overnight so you can heat and eat them the next day.
Preparation: Each meal comes with heating instructions on the package. The containers are safe to heat in the oven or microwave. I tried the chicken avocado burger first and while I liked the sweet potato fries, I didn’t really like the taste of the burger. The instructions are pretty similar for each meal and some of them aren’t very clear. I put the entire coconut crusted chicken salad container in the microwave and ended up with soggy lettuce which is my fault, but I think the instructions should be clearer for each recipe. If you choose CookUnity, double check what’s included and you may want to set aside some of the ingredients if they don’t need to be heated.
Additional Thoughts: I read on another review that CookUnity may partner with Lancaster Farm Fresh, so that’s pretty neat. I know there are limitations in preparing meals that are ready to eat, but some of the recipes sounded a lot better than they tasted. Choosing the right chef can make your meals more enjoyable. With around 250 choices each week, I’m sure that can be accomplished after a little taste testing. The chicken cordon bleu was my favorite chicken meal and the pork tenderloin with sweet potato au gratin was my favorite meal overall. It was soooo good!
Overall Review: The selection is great and I think almost everyone could find something that meets their diet requirements. Not needing any preparation is great for low energy days when you still want to eat well. However, the price is a little high for the portion sizes and not all of the meals are as delicious as they sound. I hope my CookUnity review will help you decide if their ready meals are right for you.
